I Exhibition
The first part of a three-step project is a group exhibition 'Something Thrown in the Way of the Observer' at Museum Van Loon, curated by Bernke Klein Zandvoort.

Are we ruling the things around us or are we ruled by the things around us? This is the fundamental question of Bernke Klein Zandvoort and Caroline Ruijgrok in their three-parted project: Object-Observer. I was invited already in the end of 2014 to be the Graphic Designer through out the whole project.

Something Thrown in the Way of the Observer is also the title of Bernke’s graduation thesis (2011). This thesis is the applied fundament of the exhibition.

Since this project will reach its end in the beginning of 2016, I recommended not building a CMS controlled website, but instead keep it updated. I think this wise choice should be made by more designers.

Parking Lot #1
The Parking Lot magazine was the craziest thing I made with the local printers so far... but that I'll explain later.

Katerina Karagianni asked me to be the next Graphic Designer of the magazine that she brought to life together with André Avelãs. The production restriction is to stencilprint it and every issue is done in collaboration with a different designer. Various artists of their interest were invited to create work outside of their comfort zone, which was a good starting point for me, too.

I chose for Reviva Color paper in April of 2015, bad timing. It was pretty much of a hustle in the Netherlands, because the paper company had just gone bankrupt and there went your favorite paper of choice! But not for me, I went myself to Paperlinx in Diemen and paid in cash! Then got a van and delivered the paper myself to three different printers in town: Stencilzolder, Kaboem! and Kunst@AGA.
Lekker DIY! We printed in total with this colors: orange (RISO), red (RISO), green (RISO), black (RISO), yellow (RISO), fluo pink (RISO), blue (RICOH), purple (RICOH), magenta (RICOH), green (RICOH), blue (RICOH), red (RICOH), navy blue (RICOH), grey (RICOH).

Stichting Trebelsee
The foundation was established by Bernke Klein Zandvoort and Caroline Ruijgrok, both writers and visual artists. Object-Observer is the first project under the moniker of their foundation Trebelsee. I designed and programmed the website.
But what does 'Trebelsee' mean?!...
Some people think they know the answer: soon to be continued.

Kamperen tot Vrijheidsbezinning
22–25 MAY 2015 (82nd) annual Pinksterlanddagen in Appelscha.
The Pinksterlanddagen is a political festival in which a big part of the anarchist/activist movement of the Netherlands is represented. The PL also tries to reach out over the borders and to invite international guests.

The poster from the previews year is always hanging at the OCCII. I asked to do the posters and the reader design of the 82nd festival.
First of all everything is produced in collaboration with local printers and not with commercial printers like flyer... com. The budget was tight but not completely used. The paper was a donation of very old left-over paper from Kaboem!. The red text is printed with Stencilzolder and the white tend/sheet is silkscreened by me at the Buurtwerkplaats Westerpark. In an edition of 500 posters & 200 flyers.

Most amusing was to research graphics on the field of activism and anarchism. I had access to a small and incomplete archive at Kaboem! which were printing the later issues (~90's) of De Raaf. The three drawings you can see here are my favorite ones... Acid Rain... INSANE! WOW that really existed once! So, in the older issues (~80's) they were using many great illustrations and drawings which made me wonder: 'Where are the drawings from today?'.

During a wonderful long weekend I could enjoy the amazing nature around the camping terrain. On the terrain there is a building which hosts an archive of all socio- political printed publications in the Netherlands. My trip there happened to be on the right weekend, because the archive was being cleaned up and all duplicate issues were up for grabs. I got a very nice collection now, very nice.

13digits.info
Kerstin Heyen, my dear friend who made me come to Amsterdam works now as sales representative for idea books. She bought the url 13digits.info and asked me and Byrthe to design her website and business card. Byrthe and me knew right away that the 13 digits of the ISBN number will lead the design.
We set up a grid of 13 cells and used the information that Kerstin was planning to communicate. In addition to that we list all the publications that she trades during her visits to Germany and Austria. The ISBN numbers reveal the book title as alternative text, by hovering over them. The links lead to the archive of idea books for more information.

Group exhibition
I got asked to do the graphic design for the group show 'Does Not Equal' at w139 in March 2015. I was happy to join the enormous group of 35 artists. The communication design was quickly established and I felt a bit like my work was done before the exhibition was even announced. So, I set myself another goal, something with the artists...

My immediate conclusion was to make a group photo with all 35 participants. I assigned Mariko Kuwahara and Chathelijne Smulders to curate the group photo. They made a performance setting, which was documented with photos. Afterwards I worked together with the artist on the photo choices consensus. We chose a series of pictures showing the dynamic of the performance, which to my mind represented the group in the best possible way.

Project catalogue, 48 pages, gathering of: fashion line, VIP statements on racisms in Sweden, material collection, association archive & comic
Pablo and his sister, Julia Londono, are the creators of This is Sweden. Two fashion designers are tired of racism in Sweden and the way people are tolerating it. But what can a fashion designer do?... Speak your mind and spend his time with picking up the words and images against it, like the Londono’s do. I have an immigration background just like them, cause my parents moved from Poland to Germany in the late 70s and I was born in Germany 1982. What am I? German or Polish?
I worked with Pablo on a photo catalog for an exhibition. We made a concept for the catalog, of a photographed layout pages; sorted in chapters of models, material, associations and a comic of the fashion collection.
For the aesthetic I chose to make a hand drawn typeface, which includes the logo and the Swedish flag.
May people have joined this two great Londono's.

EEN ZEKER IEMAND
The department Language & Image gave a workshop under the guidance of Annelein Pompe and Caroline Ruijgrok. They were intrigued by the idea that images are described with words, so the turned the principle around to see what happens. The final cut is published on de Grids.
The first time I heard about this project, I thought, wow that’s great. If you have been studying in the basic year at the Rietveld, you know Phil, the nude model. During the workshop of Annelein and Caroline the students had to describe Phil with words instead of drawing him with a line. I heard that Phil found it very intimidating, cause it felt different. The students delivered very diverse range of works. The editorial group edited the work down to a representative and solid collection.
I designed and programmed a website for this project and while being occupied with the content I found it interesting to see how data coding of text is so abstract in relation to images as photo’s or drawings – text is so much more universal.
Some secrets of the function: if you open this link, you become every time another yellow frame in the background and the name in the text changes from Phil to another fictional name, that the students made up – 14 students in total.

KNiK – eyes on culture
Nora Uitterlinden in 2013 established the online blog KNiK–Eyes on Culture. Nora gathers information, articles and phonemes around the OCCII line-up and its community. KNiK and OCCII publish annually the best content in a printed zine, which I design and produce.

All inside pages have a gradient from color in the top (red/green/blue) to black in the bottom. The cover consists of two gradient layers. It was very exiting to print this issue.

We were very lucky to get excellent paper from the printer robstolk (Fedrigoni Acroprint 1, 120gm2). Every time it is interesting to see how images turn out on different papers. The usual paper at Kaboem! was always Caxton – which luckily doesn't exist anymore, cause the images turn out very poor.

The evening at PERDU had a nice line-up. The first speakers from different art book interests talked about their fascination and set an inspiring tone for the workshop I gave.

In two hours people could work with a sheet that I printed some A3's, ready to: fold to sections or to be cut and folded or cut and glued.
The 20 participants made some absurd, ambitious, crazy, freaky, general, lose, proper, sculpture-like... books. Some were under the impression that it was a completion, but that might be their own general perspective of life, but hey.

Henny is Kaboem! He is located in the WG-terrein and has:

AB Dick Offset machine (A3) with all kind of colors and a (A2) RISO stencil machine with black, blue, fluo pink, red, green & yellow.
Since 2013 I'm printing with Henny gradients for the OCCII, once a month. This AB Dick machine is not the very best for gradients but it works if you're quick.

Woonvereniging SWETO
Stephen – a friend of mine – was planning with some other people on buying a building. They formed the woonvereniging SOWETO and managed to buy the building on the Pieter Nieuwlandstraat 93-95, Amsterdam.

For the funding I was asked to help with a flyer, I guess it helped.

Where to start with a flyer design anyway I thought. But since I dived into the Amsterdamse School typography I came across the Brick Expressionism – good starting point I thought, since the building at Pieter Nieuwlandstraat has a couple of different brick patterns.
The bricks on the flyer have the (1:10) to an original brick. In addition the brick graphics are point of origin for the typesetting/baseline grid.

OCCII 2014 – Calendar
After editing, designing and printing the paper publications for the OCCII in 2013, I had the feeling of giving it a more causal beauty in 2014. The upcoming colors will be every month complimentary and I'm looking forward to mix all kind of brown tones. With the limited ink choices at Kaboem, every time I am going through a new challenge trying to figure out a good color mix. This website helps me plan a bit: colorschemedesigner.com

Working with the limitations at the printer made this production a quest.
The limitations of the folding/stapling machine: the machine can’t fold/stable a smaller format then an A5 result. My goal was to figure out a layout on the print sheet, in order to print all 16 (A6) pages with only two plates. After one hour playing around with little dummy’s I found a way. Still working within the OCCII budget, the only compromise is that half of the calendars edition have a staple sticking the other way around. Just in case you wonder why this is so.

New Years wishes to my DEARS
Sending out Christmas cards or New Year’s wishes is probably something that everybody does, you say. But it isn’t, because I don’t get any cards. So I decided that this year I want to hear from my dears. I sent out 21 envelops with a letter and a postcard.

The Age of Aquariums
Brenda Bosma approached me to make the design of her horoscope compilation, because she knew that I am her biggest fan. The horoscopes have been recycled from the previous editions of SUBBACULTCHA! in 2011 and 2012. Grijs Deddens (1987, Groningen) contributed his recycled illustrations of zodiac signs and enjoys the way they are reproduced as much as I do.
My layout inspiration comes from the Hebrew core text layout, where the old text is surrounded by several interpretation texts. Well, isn’t it all about confusion?

Zicht op Ruimte
‘Zicht op Ruimte’ is a handbook about visual accessibility in public space. The author Berry den Brinker expanded his research in order to create a statement in the field. His approach was very interesting for me as graphic designer, because he evaluates public space with his limited sight and sees in this way problematic better than people with a common good sight.
By engaging in the field of visual accessibility/readability I came across many designer rules and many opinions on how things should look like. There are experts for the bigger spaces as well as for the smallest details. We focused on the small details in order to state a contrast of beauty and function.
We created alternatives of certain characters. Characters like C, E, F, J, S, a, c, e, s, g, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9 embed shapes, which can change optically, depending on the typeface and the viewer’s sight quality.
An easy self test for readability is as follows: Look at the text and squeeze your eyes, squeeze them so much that you are unsure about what you can read. Compare the two texts. Can you see it? Ask yourself: Which typeface is more beautiful?

Lecture on stencil printing
Anja Groten invited me to speak about print production during an event of Hackers & Designers at De Punt in Amsterdam.
I have been wondering how to not make a dry lecture... And print production means to me also, how to not make a boring print. Since printing works mostly with layers of inks and rasters, I have been experimenting with layers of beamed colors (additive color system). Two beamers made me able to show the layering in an oversized sized way to the audience.

Guffaw by Lotte Reimann
Another publication of Guffaw, this time stencil printed in Nijmengen with Knust-Extrapool.
We have been experimenting with color separations to represent the work of Lotte Reimann. The color black is removed from the images and can be found only in her texts.
This publication was made possible with the generous help of Knust-Extrapool. In their two-week ‘Work Holidays Residency’ we produced an edition of 120 copies. A wonderful and intensive experience with Jan-Dirk and Joyce, which we want to thank a lot.
The publication is available for € 21 at San Serriffe and Athenaeum Nieuwscentrum in Amsterdam, at Halfwithal shop in Nijmegen and via direct contact with Lotte Reimann.

Dear Madeira,
is a self-initiated residency project
by five female artists from Europe and the US. The joint venture has been planned at forehand and took place from March 28 till April 30, 2013.
Our presentation approach for this short time was: 'The process is the product.' Applying this concept, Byrthe and I created a website where we documented our process, on daily basis.
The infrastructure of our research. In order to let everybody follow our development it contained a growing archive with respect to each person’s individual focus. Next to this, we used it as a tool, a 'table of content' for our artistic dialog within the group.
On a weekly basis we published a bulletin and hosted open studio meetings.
We are currently working towards exhibitions and a catalogue.

Collecting Issues—OCCII
'OCCII or hut on chicken legs'; April (p. 2/3)
Since we set up a new monthly idea on how to promote the OCCII schedule, we also added a new layer to it. Instead of using expressive images this year we want to do it in a different way. The new aspect of the upcoming monthly issues is the space of an internal stage, which invites all programming groups and the network. They can use this space for any kind of content and communication. It behaves a bit like a "recording of an ongoing stream" of insights.
Archive
The design is based on a collecting habbit. The monthly booklets can be collected, by putting them inside each other. By doing this all written content evolves on the left side and the complete agenda on the right side of the booklet. The collection will be completed with the twelve editions of 2013, they will join to a yearbook. Concept & design by Karoline Swiezynski. Printed with Henny, Kaboem (offset) Amsterdam. The printed matter design for the Offprint Amsterdam 2012 is based on the concept of reproduction, art & publishing. In collaboration with Jules Estèves, we wondered how an actual branding can be transformed to the level of publishing. With the posters and leaflets, we chose to publish the work of two Amsterdam-based printers: screen printer Kees Maas and mimeograph operator de Stencilkelder, assigning them to print with a color spectrum.

The art & publishing fair Offprint Amsterdam took place from the 20-23.9.2012, at the Westergasfabriek, during the Unseen Photo Festival The fair was organized by Yannick Bouillis, who already organized the Amsterdam Art/Book Fair 2012 with Delphine Bedel. The next will take place in Offprint Project Paris 15-18.11.2012.

“Mut zur Wut” is a poster competition on the subject of rage. Someone can says that this socio critical design contribution communicates in a appellative languages. Which doesn’t focus on the issues reflection, but on advertising an problem. What doesn't help it.

In one of Marshall Mcluhans lecture he points out the situation of violance, which I think surves my point:

The catalogue frames a long time project with its most important details. In order to move on. The young photographer Lotte Reimann was very close involved during the design process. The dummy publication is waiting to be published.
Guffaw started with the writing of my short novel. It is a partial autobiographical and partial fictional short novel about a woman having conflicts with her partner. They live a long distance relationship and he does not get along with it. Meanwhile this story is build up there are sequences of her single life in which she is mainly looking for sensational experiences, that contain danger and a strong impact on the body. [...]

2de Amsterdamse Architectenbal and the Food & Architecture Fair 2012, branding

The Architectural ball takes place every year in Amsterdam, organized by members of the BNA.
In cooperation with Christofer Goertz, we redesigned the branding in 2012. The only restriction there was: the colour green.
The program of ‘Dag van de architectuur 2012’ theme was FOOD, because the city promoted the Centrale Markthal, a monument building located in the Food Center. In order to stimulate its reconstruction through the visiting architects.

Straatfeest—Sint Jansstraat
The Sint Jansstraat is a little alley in the center of Amsterdam, located in the Red Light district. Red light windows aren't to find here, but a couple of creatives. Since summer 2011 the neighbours organize a day in front of their doors.

From an application to the Berlage Fonds in January 2011: "[Framing the coast.] Not a golden frame nor a Hema frame. The coast is a public space, it is mostly used as vacation melting pot in the summer time. Our common balcony at the country border, with the view on the open sea and nothing infront of us but the horizon. Evidence of our cultural point of views are buildings in the dunes and at the beach. How does the coast now actually look like. Google street view doesn’t deliver images from sea perspective. This documentation is as well interesting in times where the rising ocean level is known as an issue in the Netherlands." [...]
The photographic documentation of the complete Dutch coastline - seen from the sea - began in Spring 2011 as an unconventional graduation project. It is simple in its thought, monumental in its content and abstarct in its final form: a stack of individual postcards (166 x 125 mm). 60 of 370 km of the Dutch coastline are already currently recorded: The first boat trip between Bloemendaal and Wassenaar on Sunday the 3rd April is documented in 140 postcards. Second boat trip between Bloemendaal and Bergen aan Zee on Sunday the 10th April is documented in 87 postcards. Each photo is described with a serie number and correct location.
The production is digital print and self-published. With thanks to Ruud Cloeck and Sanne van Pommeren of the Bloemendaal aan Zee rescue team.

"Short stories & no letters." by Sandra Walusimbi Nanteza

This publication is an applied and collaborative graduation work between Sandra Walusimbi Nanteza (VAV department) and myself. It began with a collection of personal letters from Sandra to her closest relatives, dealing with the impressive clash of Ugandian and European mindsets. In unannounced performances, Sandra reads these letters to people she knows, and people she doesn't know. (The letters remain unpublished and can only be discovered through direct communication with Sandra.)
Following each reading, a short story is written concerning the qualities of the setting of the 12 letter readings. The shape of every story—all of the same length—is a folded sheet that also acts as a take-away at public readings. The collection of all stories comprises the publication. The inside of the book can be called content, as no extra pages were added. The covers, containing the background information, can be called the context.
The edition of 300 handmade books is self-published by Sandra.

We wanted to visualize the AA/BF as a contemporary book fair—its focus being on reflecting on emerging practices and developments in art. The fair is divided into two parts: lectures and exhibiting publishers. Our green image, which is the base of the fair’s identity, consists of two objects, a dustcover placed within a grid. The dustcover represents the many publishers and the empty space they will fill. The grid represents the lectures which gives everything a perspective and places it in a context.

We took on this project because we wanted to spread and unveil the possibilities of bookbinding that are available at the Rietveld. To show people from other departments what we at graphic design took for granted. By listing and explaining the small but important things you have to think about to get the desired result. And by making and documenting the different techniques available in a blank and basic way to emphasize the function, whereby techniques can be chosen which relate to the content.

Indirect Gaze—How to prove dark matter?

We don't know what dark matter is, but apparently we know what it can not be. The indirect analysis is a way of mapping the unknown. The poster shows a map of my development during the research on the unknown. My biggest interest was to create and modify explanatory graphics of the optical physics. The research was focused on the leftover that gets lost in the application of systems—basically the registration of power when context works as a filter.

Melkweg labyrinth

This project started with an assignment given by Julia Born: "Make a portrait of a building in your environment and represent it in a publication." To portrait a person is already not easy, but to portrait a building seams to be pretty BIG.
The Melkweg building was known to me, because I have been working there during this time. As staff member you experience a venue like the Melkweg way different than guests do. Inspiring to me was the amount of rooms in that building. The Melkweg keeps changing since 40 years, they are always reconstructing or expanding somewhere. As well interesting was to see the whole amazing inside empty during the day. Guests see only a little part of the building, f. e. the Oude Zaal during a concert. My mission has been clear quick. Within four to five weeks 17 rooms has been photographed mostly during six different day times. The follow up of thoughts collage images is coordinated by a one way walk through the building. The walk description starts at the entrance at the Lijnbaansgracht and it ends with the Café at the Marnixstraat.
